Spinal Decompression Therapy

Greenwood Chiropractic utilizes Spinal Decompression Therapy for some patients who have low back pain. This gentle and effective therapy is prescribed on a case-by-case basis to assist in the recovery of people experiencing low back pain and discomfort. In combination with chiropractic care, Spinal Decompression Therapy is an extremely effective tool in the treatment plan of some patients. While not everyone is a good candidate for decompression therapy, it is the perfect fit for some types of conditions.

Back Decompression

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical approach to improving symptoms and causation of bulging or herniated discs of the low back. Often patients come to us with these conditions after a different doctor has suggested surgical options as a way to “treat” or fix their condition. So, how is decompression accomplished? If the Doctor prescribes this treatment option to you, either he or one of our experienced staff members will show you to a private treatment room, wrap a specific belt around your middle and have you lay down. Specifics of your condition, location of problem area and other baseline information is inputted into the machine. Then, you just lay back for 20-30 minutes and let the machine do the work for you. In fact, we turn off the lights and most people take a nap!

The act and science of spinal decompression is that it uses traction force to gently separate your discs slightly, allowing air and nutrients back into the dysfunctioning disc space. The process produces a reverse vacuum effect that pulls any disc material that may be bulging out, pinching nerves and causing you pain or discomfort in your back and extending into your legs, and promoting it to return to its correct space. In combination with chiropractic care, spinal decompression therapy can be a useful tool to patients who have had lingering or acute conditions of the mid-to-low back. The Doctor will let you know and discuss this option with you, if you are a good candidate for this type of therapy. Additional materials and a video will be sent home with you for you and your family to review, which outlines the specific values and benefits this mode of therapy will add to your treatment plan. Since all cases and conditions are unique, we strive to have the most advanced medical options for our patients to achieve the highest level of health with techniques and therapies that positively enhance their recovery time.
